Mauritius Telecom net profit up 16 pct in 2010
PORT LOUIS, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Mauritius' leadingtelecommunications operator, Mauritius Telecom (MT), recorded a 16percent net profit increase to reach 1.7 billion Mauritian rupees(about 60.7 million U. S. dollars) in the year 2010, local mediareported on Tuesday.
According to the Independent daily, the company's pretax profitfor 2010 increased to 2.4 billion rupees (about 85.7 milliondollars), marking a forward leap of 17.1 percent.
Meanwhile, MT's operating revenue in 2010 reached around 7.4billion rupees (about 264.3 million dollars), a 4.8 percent increaseof 336 million rupees (about 1.2 million dollars) compared to 2009.
Mobile telephony continued to be the most important revenuesegment, by bringing in an operating revenue of 3.3 billion rupees(about 117.9 million dollars), representing a growth of 10.4 percentover 2009.
Revenue in the Internet segment increased from 558 million rupees(about 19.9 million dollars) to 673 million rupees (about 24 milliondollars), representing a big growth of 20.6 percent.
Capital investment of MT amounted to 1.5 billion rupees (about53.6 million dollars) for 2010. All the four subsidiaries alsoexperienced growth in 2010, including 21 percent for Telecom PlusLtd and 10.4 percent for Cellplus Mobile Communications Ltd, 6percent for Call Services Ltd and 2 percent for Teleservices Ltd.
Earnings per share for the period rose to 8.98 rupees (about 0.321 dollar) compared to 7.74 rupees (about 0.276 dollar) in 2009 anddividend per share increased from 4.68 rupees (about 0.167 dollar)to 7.46 rupees (about 0.266 dollar).
The government of Mauritius, the State Bank of Mauritius and theNational Pensions Fund jointly own MT's 59 percent shares, while theemployees hold 1 percent. The remaining 40 percent belong to FranceTelecom.
There are more than 1 million mobile subscribers in the IndianOcean island nation of Mauritius, whose population is about 1.26million. Amongst the subscribers, about 640,000 are with MT.
